South Louisiana’s climate is unique — long growing seasons, high humidity, mild winters, and sudden cold snaps. Because of that, trimming trees and shrubs in Lafayette, Scott, Broussard, and the surrounding Acadiana area requires timing that fits Zone 9 conditions.

Here’s the local landscaper’s guide to when (and how) to trim your plants so they stay healthy, full, and beautiful year‑round.

🍂 Best Time to Trim Trees in South Louisiana

1. Late Winter (January–Early March)

This is the ideal time for most tree trimming in Acadiana.

Why late winter works best:

  • Trees are dormant
  • No active growth to stress
  • Cuts heal quickly once spring arrives
  • You can see the structure of the tree clearly

Trim these in late winter:

  • Live Oaks
  • Drake Elms
  • Maples
  • Sycamores
  • Crape Myrtles (proper pruning — no “crape murder”)
  • Most shade trees

🌸 When to Trim Flowering Shrubs

2. Trim Spring‑Blooming Shrubs After They Bloom

These shrubs set buds in fall/winter.

If you trim too early, you cut off the flowers.

Trim after blooming:

  • Azaleas
  • Camellias
  • Gardenias
  • Hydrangeas (light shaping only)
  • Indian Hawthorn

Best timing:

April–May, right after the blooms fade.

3. Trim Summer‑Blooming Shrubs in Late Winter or Early Spring

These bloom on new growth, so trimming encourages more flowers.

Trim in February–March:

  • Hibiscus
  • Lantana
  • Esperanza
  • Vitex
  • Butterfly Bush
  • Knock Out Roses

4. Light Shaping: Year‑Round

Because Zone 9 stays warm, evergreens can be shaped almost anytime.

Good candidates for year‑round shaping:

  • Boxwoods
  • Dwarf Yaupon Holly
  • Loropetalum
  • Podocarpus
  • Ligustrum

5. Heavy Pruning: Late Winter

If you need to cut them back hard, do it January–March.

🌴 Palm Tree Trimming in South Louisiana

6. Trim Palms Only When Necessary

Palms are different — they don’t follow typical pruning rules.

Trim palms when:

  • Fronds are brown
  • Fronds are hanging
  • Seeds or flowers need removal

Do NOT trim green fronds.

They feed the palm and protect it from cold snaps.

Best timing:

Late spring through early fall (April–September)

❄️ Avoid Trimming Before a Freeze

This is a big one for Acadiana.

Fresh cuts make plants vulnerable to cold damage.

If a freeze is in the forecast, wait.

🌱 General Rules for Louisiana Trimming

✔ Don’t trim more than 25–30% at once

✔ Avoid trimming during extreme heat (July–August)

✔ Avoid trimming right before a freeze

✔ Use clean, sharp tools

✔ Trim for shape, airflow, and plant health

🛑 Plants You Should NOT Trim in Winter

These are sensitive to cold and should be left alone until spring:

  • Tropical hibiscus
  • Crotons
  • Banana plants
  • Philodendrons
  • Bougainvillea
  • Tropical palms

Wait until March–April to cut back freeze damage.
